Norway joins multilateral fund to support Syria's reconstruction
Norway will contribute to a new multilateral reconstruction fund for Syria, created at the request of the country's transitional authorities.
Norwegian representatives have made several trips to Syria after the fall of the Assad dictatorship in December 2024, including visits by the development minister, foreign minister and a state secretary. In response to a request from Syria's transitional authorities, Norway will add its money to a World Bank-established multi-donor fund for reconstruction. The money is earmarked for health, energy and broader rebuilding of the country's devastated infrastructure and institutions.
Saudi Arabia is reported to be preparing a large financial contribution as well. The fund is designed to mobilize additional resources and improve coordination among donors, addressing the massive reconstruction needs estimated at trillions of kroner. Officials said the fund should become operational by 2026, with private sector involvement seen as essential for reviving the Syrian economy and creating jobs.
Why it matters
The funding could accelerate Syria's post-war recovery and stabilize a region long affected by conflict.
