Norway's Støre meets Canada's Carney in Ottawa to boost energy and AI ties

Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre touched down in Ottawa on Sunday evening, joining Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney at the parliament building for a two-day visit. The leaders, who convened after Carney’s delayed arrival following a discussion with French President Emmanuel Macron on a French island near Newfoundland, will explore ways to deepen the Norway-Canada partnership in sectors such as energy, technology, artificial intelligence and space, with Norway highlighted as a natural NATO ally possessing world-leading expertise.

Prior to the talks Støre signed two official visit protocols, during which Carney joked about the signing process. Støre noted the significance of being in Canada and smiled for Norwegian media. The visit signals a push for closer ties with Canada while relations with the United States have been strained under the Trump administration. Støre is scheduled to leave for New York on Monday to attend the opening of the United Nations General Assembly, a customary stop for Norwegian leaders.
