Norway sees surge in AI use as government pushes regulation and safety framework

A new SSB study indicates a notable increase in AI tool usage across Norwegian homes and businesses compared with the previous year. Minister Torgeir Micaelsen welcomed the trend, arguing that AI can boost productivity, value creation and public services. He referenced recent alarming statements from Anthropic researcher Evan Hubinger and executives at OpenAI and SpaceX urging slower development.

At the UN summit in New York, Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre and Finnish PM Alexander Stubb helped launch a pledge signed by 22 leaders to control advanced AI models. Micaelsen said Norway will take the warnings seriously, pursue domestic regulatory steps, and promote international cooperation through initiatives such as KI Norge and AI-Norge, while encouraging cautious adoption by firms and citizens.
