Norway tests containerized anti-ship missile system with 250-km range
Kongsberg trialed a prototype that fits four NSM anti-ship missiles into a standard 20-foot container on a Norwegian test range in early October.
In early October, Kongsberg carried out a test of its new container-based missile module on a military range in Norway. The prototype houses four Naval Strike Missile (NSM) rounds inside a standard 20-foot shipping container, with a retractable launch mechanism that opens the container roof before firing. Funded from Kongsberg’s own resources, the trial aims to accelerate commercialization and lower technical risk for prospective customers.
The system can be deployed on trucks, fixed land sites or naval vessels, allowing rapid relocation between platforms. Engineers solved the challenge of intense launch pressure and heat, ensuring the container safely contains the missile’s effects. The NSM offers a range of over 250 km and uses GPS navigation plus an infrared seeker with automatic target recognition, providing a potent anti-surface capability.
Why it matters
The system offers navies a fast, flexible way to field long-range anti-ship missiles, reshaping maritime defence options.
