Norway to establish a unified drone force by 2027 with emphasis on counter-drone systems

Norway's defence ministry revealed a plan to build a comprehensive drone organisation by 2027, aiming to keep the armed forces equipped with the latest unmanned technology. The upcoming defence budget will allocate resources to broaden the drone strategy introduced in December, encompassing aerial, underwater and land-based systems. A central element of the plan is the development of interceptor drones designed to counter hostile drones, reflecting one outlet threat environment.
Minister Tore O. Sandvik emphasized the need for supporting infrastructure such as battery chargers and ammunition for offensive drones, as well as engineering expertise. Deputy party leader Tonje Brenna pointed to the ongoing war in Ukraine as a valuable source of practical knowledge on modern warfare. The programme is also intended to create opportunities for Norwegian industry to supply both national forces and NATO partners.
