Norway warns most households lack preparation for prolonged internet outages
A new Norstat survey for the Directorate for Civil Protection reveals that many Norwegians have no concrete plan if mobile and internet services disappear for days.
A recent Norstat poll ordered by the Directorate for Civil Protection indicates that a majority of Norwegian households consider themselves insufficiently ready for a prolonged loss of mobile and internet connectivity. The survey points to potential causes such as extreme weather events, accidents or deliberate sabotage. Participants reported owning battery-operated DAB radios and charged power banks, while the Directorate advises families to stockpile clean drinking water, shelf-stable food, heating equipment, lighting, first-aid supplies and essential documents.
Officials also urge citizens to arrange backup sleeping arrangements and keep a modest amount of cash and payment cards on hand. The communications regulator notes that NRK P1 will broadcast emergency information over battery-powered radios, and each municipality has its own plan for disseminating alerts. Justice and Public Safety Minister Astri Aas-Hansen emphasizes the importance of a "preparedness buddy" and recommends at least 20 liters of water per person for a week-long self-sufficiency period.
Why it matters
Many Norwegians lack basic emergency supplies, risking safety during extended network failures.
