Norwegian central bank's rate decision faces split market expectations, possible multiple hikes

The Norges Bank rate committee, led by Ida Wolden Bache, will announce its decision on Thursday, while analysts are divided on whether rates will rise.

On Thursday at 10:00, the Norges Bank's rate committee, chaired by Ida Wolden Bache, will reveal its monetary policy decision. Market sentiment is divided, with roughly half expecting a rate increase and the other half not, and early Sunday estimates put the odds of a hike at 62%. Handelsbanken chief economist Marius Gonsholt Hov points to core inflation hovering around 3% for about two years and a recent uptick in August's price growth as key reasons for a possible raise.

He adds that firm wage expectations and rising rate forecasts in other countries, such as Sweden and Switzerland, could further influence Norway's stance. Hov cautions that even a pause would be a temporary measure pending more data, and that one outlet rate level may persist for an extended period, affecting long-term loan planning.

Why it matters

The decision will shape borrowing costs and inflation outlook for Norway and influence regional financial markets.
