Norwegian Coast Guard Inspects Two Chinese Vessels Seeking Shelter Near Vesterålen
Norway's Coast Guard boarded one of two Chinese bulk carriers that had taken refuge from a storm off Lofoten, with plans to inspect the second ship.
A pair of Chinese bulk carriers sought shelter from a storm outside Lofoten, prompting Norway's Coast Guard to intervene. The vessels, Ya Qing Hai Yang and Jian Yang Cheng He, were among twelve ships that requested protection in the area. Coast Guard personnel have already boarded Ya Qing Hai Yang and are arranging a visit to Jian Yang Cheng He.
A spokesperson for the Coast Guard said the operation is ongoing and no further details will be provided at this time. Ya Qing Hai Yang was placed on U.S. sanctions in January 2025 and is also subject to EU sanctions for delivering power-generation modules to Russia's Arctic LNG 2 facility in October 2024. The incident highlights heightened scrutiny of sanctioned foreign vessels in Norwegian waters.
