Norwegian Defence signs nationwide car-rental deal with Chinese-owned Hertz Norway
The Norwegian Armed Forces have entered a four-year rental agreement with Hertz Norge, a company owned by China’s Zhejiang Geely Holding Group, for use in training and daily operations.
The Norwegian Defence logistics branch secured a nationwide rental contract that will run from June 2024 through May 2028, sourcing vehicles from First Rent A Car Norway, the operator of Hertz Norge. Hertz Norge is ultimately owned by Zhejiang Geely Holding Group, a Chinese conglomerate whose founder Li Shufu also serves on the CPPCC. The deal includes cars used in exercises, operational missions and routine base activities.
Security agencies such as the National Security Authority and PST have previously cautioned about equipment with Chinese ties, citing concerns over GPS, sensor and remote-access capabilities. Defence spokesperson Aleksander Engborg Hage acknowledged the issue but noted there is no blanket prohibition on using vehicles from specific nations. Details of technical requirements for data handling remain confidential under defence-related exemptions.
