Norwegian F-35s intercept Russian aircraft as King Haakon tours Finnmark

During King Haakon's visit to Finnmark, two Norwegian F-35 jets were launched from Evenes to identify Russian aircraft over the Barents Sea.

While King Haakon was conducting his inaugural municipal tour in Finnmark, the Royal Norwegian Air Force sent two F-35 aircraft from Evenes to track and identify Russian planes flying over the Barents Sea. The mission, described by Air Force spokesperson Stian Roen as routine, aims to maintain awareness of aircraft frequency, routes, and overall air-traffic control. During his visit, the king inspected the newly formed Kristiansten artillery battalion, Skoganvarre communications company, and the Kampluftvernbatteriet, as well as the Porsanger battalion of the Finnmark Brigade.

He also received briefings from the Home Guard and local police. The king highlighted the importance of the armed forces' diligent work in safeguarding national interests and the safety of residents.

Why it matters

The interception shows Norway’s active monitoring of Russian air activity near its borders while the king’s visit underscores domestic defence readiness.
