Norwegian grocery prices surge as shoppers chase deep discounts at Obs
Four staple food items have become significantly more expensive since 2014, prompting shoppers to flock to Obs for the best deals.
An analysis of four common grocery products—milk butter, Stabburet jam, Toro family-size lasagne and Kikkoman soy sauce—shows a pronounced price increase since 2014. Although the average price at discount retailers has climbed, Obs delivered the most aggressive promotions this week, slashing Lambi toilet paper to 174.90 kroner and offering Pepsi Max at just under half the regular price. The chain also featured a three-for-90-kroner chocolate deal.
Price experts Truls Lea and Tom Ystaas noted a surge in early-morning traffic, with shoppers assembling carts filled largely with sale items. Their weekly “shopping basket” highlighted a total saving of 920 kroner, equivalent to a 39.3% discount on the selected offers.
Why it matters
Rising food costs affect household budgets, making discount shopping increasingly crucial for Norwegian consumers.
