Norwegian krone hits strongest level in years amid European turmoil

The Norwegian krone has risen to its highest strength since early 2023, with the euro falling below 10.55 kroner, the lowest since January 2023.

The Norwegian krone is now trading at its strongest point in several years, with the euro slipping to under 10.55 kroner, a level not seen since January 2023. Dane Cekov, a strategist at SB1 Markets, attributes the rise to persistent energy price pressures and political risk across Europe, highlighting concerns over high debt in countries like France. He points out that Norges Bank's own exchange-rate target has moved back to the August 2022 benchmark, underscoring the krone's robust performance.

Cekov also mentions that upcoming elections in France and Italy, as well as fragmented politics in Germany, could keep the euro weak. He cautions that any escalation of tensions in the Middle East might further affect currency movements. While a stronger krone could lower import costs and wage growth, the long-term impact on Norway's interest rates remains uncertain.

Why it matters

A stronger krone lowers import costs and may influence Norway's inflation and interest-rate outlook.
