Norwegian man missing in Riga; police launch land and river search
A Norwegian man in his 20s from Romerike has been missing in Riga since Saturday, prompting Latvian police to search both the city and the Daugava River.
A man in his twenties from Norway's Romerike region disappeared in Riga on Saturday after being spotted near Peldu-gata in the historic centre. Police say he wore a grey sweater, dark trousers and white shoes, and he is 1.90 m tall with dark eyes and brown hair. Over the weekend, Latvian state police conducted extensive investigative steps, including reviewing CCTV footage, but have found no sign of foul play.
The search has now expanded to both land and the Daugava River, where the volunteer group Bezvets.lv is deploying underwater robots, boats and cameras to scour the waterway. Norwegian officials, including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kripos and the embassy in Riga, have been informed and are providing consular assistance to the family. The communication chief of the Latvian police, Simona Gravite, confirmed the ongoing effort, while Bezvets.lv’s Aleksandrs Faminskis described the river as a particularly challenging environment for the search.
