Norwegian rail strike forces cancellation of over 100 train services

At 10 a.m. on Friday, a rail strike erupted in Norway after Vy and the Norsk Lokomotivførerforbund could not settle wage negotiations, leading 46 union members to strike. The walkout caused the cancellation of more than 100 train services on Friday and Saturday, impacting routes such as L1 Spikkestad-Lillestrøm, L2 Stabekk-Ski and several regional lines. The Spikkestadbanen line was hit hardest, with 16 departures withdrawn.
Gro Buttingsrud, head of the Pendlerforening’s Spikkestadbanen branch, said the strike is a legal tool and expressed understanding for the drivers, while lamenting the hardship for commuters who lack alternatives and noting that no replacement bus services will be provided. She added that many passengers likely anticipated the risk and that Friday is not the worst day for a strike because many work from home. The episode underscores ongoing labor tensions over pay and working conditions in Norway’s rail sector.
