Norwegian salmon firm and two executives charged with illegal sale of dead fish
Økokrim announced that a salmon processing company and two senior staff have been indicted for gross violations of the food law after selling self-dead and unsuitable fish for human consumption.
Økokrim’s press release detailed that a salmon slaughter and sales company has been fined and that two of its senior managers have been charged with serious breaches of the food law and economic fraud. The probe revealed that from 2018 to 2023 the firm sold over 500 tonnes of farmed salmon that were not suitable for human consumption and should have been destroyed, including self-dead and clearly mature fish. In addition, more than 300 tonnes of defective production fish were exported to a customer in Germany between 2020 and 2023.
Prosecutor Kristian Johansen said the illegal sales damaged the company’s reputation and could harm the image of Norwegian salmon abroad. The two accused, both in their 50s, were responsible for overseeing the company’s operations during the period of the violations.
