Norwegian state plans record dividend payout from railway operator Bane Nor
The government intends to draw a historic dividend from Bane Nor after strong financial results in recent years.
Bane Nor, responsible for the operation, property, and infrastructure of Norway's railway network, has reported positive results for the last two accounting periods. The state, citing a preliminary outlook for the next year, plans to take a dividend that surpasses the amount withdrawn in earlier years. Legal experts confirm that such a distribution is permissible under the State Enterprise Act, provided the company retains sufficient equity.
The dividend will be recorded as income for the state and used to meet its overall fiscal commitments. In the upcoming budget, the government has earmarked substantial funds for rail maintenance, renewal, and ongoing projects, with Transport Minister Kamzy Gunaratnam pledging to raise the investment ceiling. The move comes amid concerns about a growing backlog of renewal needs for the rail network over the next decade.
Why it matters
The dividend will boost state revenues while highlighting funding challenges for Norway's rail infrastructure.
