Norwegian train drivers extend strike as negotiations with Vy stall

The Norwegian Train Drivers' Union has chosen to continue its strike, keeping the 46 locomotive engineers already on strike active, after Vy and its employer group Spekter ignored the union’s outreach. Rolf Ringdal explained that the strike aims to pressure the employer without harming third parties, though cancellations have risen, with 239 train services called off on Monday and Tuesday. The core demands focus on greater certainty over working hours and equal pay once Vy merges with Flytoget.

Spekter’s strategy director Tonje Sagstuen cited confidentiality rules surrounding a mediation request from LO/NLF, implying the union’s demands cannot be accepted under current constraints. Ringdal warned that the union may expand the strike if no reply is received. Vy’s communications head Åge-Christoffer Lundeby said every cancelled departure results from drivers being on strike, underscoring the impact on passengers.
