Norwegians split on ability to deter Russian aggression, experts say Europe outmatches Russia

Norwegians are divided over whether Norway and Europe can defend against a possible Russian attack, while a defence professor argues that NATO Europe is militarily superior to Russia.

The InFact poll commissioned by one outlet revealed a divided Norwegian public on defence readiness against Russia: about a quarter think current capabilities are sufficient, another similar portion expect adequate strength within five years, while a notable share are unsure or believe it will take longer. Sociologist Vegard Jarness highlighted this split in expectations. Defence professor Paal Sigurd Hilde emphasized that Norway on its own would struggle to fend off a Russian attack, but that the combined European NATO forces possess a decisive advantage over Russia, even without US involvement, due to their larger economies and populations.

He pointed out that Russia has committed most of its land and air units to the war in Ukraine, depleting much of its modern equipment and leaving few reserves for a new conflict along the Norwegian or Finnish borders. Hilde also stated that a Russian move against a NATO country is unlikely while the war in Ukraine continues, as mobilising additional reserves would take time and result in weaker forces.
