Norwich community divided over plan to turn historic pub into mosque

The Norwich Muslim Centre has lodged a planning application to transform the Grade II-listed Gatehouse pub on Dereham Road into a mosque featuring distinct prayer halls for men and women, a madrassa, a Hifz programme and Islamic classes. After purchasing the property with a 10% deposit, the NMC is raising £800,000 to fund the project, which would add Islamic-style screens and Arabic lettering to the 1934 building that ceased operations in 2023.

The proposal has generated more than 100 comments on the council’s planning portal, with many locals objecting on grounds that existing mosques are sufficient and that the pub served as a valued social venue. Critics also raised concerns about gender segregation and increased traffic, while a supporter suggested a mosque would bring tranquility compared with occasional pub disturbances. The Norwich & District Campaign for Real Ale voiced opposition, emphasizing the pub’s role in community life. The city council has yet to issue a decision on the matter.
