Nova Scotia home built from 612,000 recycled bottles withstands 326-mph wind test

Builders Joel German and David Saulnier erected a 2,000-sq-ft house in Meteghan River using panels made from recycled PET bottles, and a single panel survived wind speeds of 326 mph in testing.

Two Nova Scotia builders, Joel German and David Saulnier, transformed about 612,000 used plastic bottles into PET foam panels that make up the walls of a 2,000-square-foot residence in Meteghan River. The bottles were processed by Armacell into a lightweight foam core, which JD Composites incorporated into structural panels that look like conventional building components. One panel was tested in a wind tunnel and endured speeds of 326 mph, roughly double the velocity of a Category 5 hurricane, demonstrating the material’s strength.

The house also provides insulation and durability benefits, and its creators intend to evaluate long-term performance of paints and primers. Beyond a single demonstration home, the builders envision using the technology for smaller dwellings, emergency shelters and hurricane-resistant housing. The project highlights a novel way to divert plastic waste into a potentially scalable construction solution.
