NRCC says over $16,300 was siphoned in suspected foreign cyber-theft

In a recent filing, the National Republican Congressional Committee disclosed that more than $16,300 vanished from a July 7 transaction intended for Ranger Wi-Fi Consulting, a Texas wireless technology firm. The NRCC indicated that a compromise of the vendor’s systems allowed an unauthorized actor to capture the payment, and while it suggested a foreign origin, no definitive proof of the actor’s whereabouts exists. Spokesperson Will Kiley emphasized that the breach was identified right away, that efforts are underway with banking and legal officials to recover the funds, and that safeguards have been strengthened to prevent recurrence.

The theft adds to a series of recent political committee scams, including a similar loss by the Democratic National Committee and a separate incident involving Republican Senate candidate Mike Rogers. The NRCC’s warning comes amid heightened scrutiny as the party seeks to defend its narrow House majority in the fall elections.
