NRK pulls Russian intelligence documentary over AI source-identification fears

NRK decided to temporarily unpublish "Skyggekrigen," a documentary examining Russian intelligence, after receiving information from DR about the danger that artificial intelligence could reveal the identities of protected sources. Frode Frøyland, head of the NRK Brennpunkt team, emphasized that safeguarding sources is a higher priority than keeping the program available. Professor Morten Goodwin from the University of Agder warned that superficial anonymisation—such as slight image blurring or minor voice distortion—can be reversed by AI tools, potentially pinpointing sources.

He added that even with rigorous anonymisation, AI may narrow down a source’s identity when the pool of possible candidates is small. Goodwin assessed that Norwegian outlets usually practice solid source protection, but they remain only "somewhat" secure. The decision reflects growing concerns about AI’s ability to compromise journalistic confidentiality.
