NRW CDU slips in poll as state election approaches, coalition prospects shift

According to a recent Forsa poll, the Christian Democratic Union in North Rhine-Westphalia has dropped to its weakest point in one outlet legislative period, falling below earlier figures. Hendrik Wüst, the state premier and CDU leader, who is often mentioned as a possible heir to Friedrich Merz, now confronts a more competitive electoral environment. The Greens, the CDU's coalition partner, could help the party retain a narrow governing majority after the state election on 25 April.

The Alternative for Germany has surged to an all-time high, surpassing the Social Democratic Party, which stays at its lowest support level. The Left party has risen to eight percent, potentially re-entering the state parliament for the first time since 2010, while the FDP appears set to lose its continuous 21-year representation in the Düsseldorf Landtag. Smaller parties collectively account for a modest share of the vote.
