NSE revamps pre-open auction schedule and order rules starting today
The National Stock Exchange has introduced a new pre-open auction framework that alters order entry windows, modification limits, and matching procedures for all equity cash and derivatives securities.
The National Stock Exchange has rolled out a revised pre-open auction process that applies to all stocks in the equity cash market, including SME, InvITs, REITs and derivatives. While the overall session still runs from 09:00 to 09:15, the order-entry window is now 09:00-09:05, allowing both limit and market orders, with modifications and cancellations permitted only in that span. From 09:05-09:10, participants may add or adjust limit orders, but market orders become locked.
The matching and trade-confirmation phase occurs between 09:10 and 09:12, prioritising orders by time then price, and no changes are allowed thereafter. A buffer from 09:12-09:15 transitions to continuous trading. Experts note the changes are intended to make opening price discovery more structured and reduce volatile last-minute activity.
Why it matters
The new rules aim to make opening price formation more orderly, affecting traders and investors across Indian markets.
