NSE's IPO poised to reshape India's primary market and weaken unlisted trading
The National Stock Exchange of India's public listing will boost the country's main market but is expected to sharply curtail activity in the unlisted share sector.
The upcoming IPO of the National Stock Exchange of India Ltd. is projected to strengthen the nation's primary equity market while dealing a blow to the thriving unlisted-share ecosystem. Until now, the exchange accounted for about half of trading volume in that shadow market, according to UnlistedZone. Its listing will remove a key, highly liquid and well-known asset that has attracted both private investors and specialist brokers.
Without a comparable issuer, platforms may have to shift attention to smaller companies in sectors such as space, aerospace, defense and data centers, which typically offer thinner liquidity and fewer disclosures. Industry participants like Rajan Shah of 3A Capital Services note that interest will remain selective, citing companies such as Sterlite Electric Ltd and Garuda Aerospace Ltd. Past experiences in the unlisted market show mixed results, with some investors facing losses while others achieving outsized gains, underscoring the importance of timing and valuation.
Why it matters
The IPO could redirect capital away from a fast-growing market for private shares, reshaping investment opportunities in India.
