NSW government seeks independent costing of One Nation's election promises
NSW Treasurer Daniel Mookhey announced plans to have One Nation’s policy proposals evaluated by the Parliamentary Budget Office ahead of the state election.
Ahead of the upcoming New South Wales election, Treasurer Daniel Mookhey said the Labor government will push for One Nation to have its policy proposals independently costed by the Parliamentary Budget Office. The PBO, a non-partisan agency established in 2010, has historically provided costings only for Labor and the Coalition. Mookhey noted One Nation’s admiration for American and Argentine wage, healthcare, and public-service reforms and warned that voters deserve transparent fiscal analysis of such plans.
He framed the move as a safeguard against “budget fantasy” in a volatile economic climate. Under the proposed rule change, Labor, the Liberal-National Coalition and One Nation would all be required to submit their platforms for PBO review. The initiative aims to give the electorate comparable data on the taxpayer impact of each party’s proposals.
Why it matters
Voters will receive unbiased cost estimates for One Nation’s policies, helping them compare election promises across parties.
