NT Independent MP Yiŋiya Guyula Resigns Over CLP's Controversial Policies

Independent member Yiŋiya Guyula quit the NT Legislative Assembly, condemning recent CLP legislation as harmful to Aboriginal communities.

Yiŋiya Guyula, elected as an independent for the seat formerly known as Nhulunbuy and now called Mulka, has stepped down from the Northern Territory Legislative Assembly effective immediately. In his statement, he criticised the Country Liberal Party government for passing legislation that he described as "dehumanising, oppressing and destroying" Aboriginal communities, particularly a recent overhaul of child-protection laws that lacked any remote-community input.

Guyula argued that the government has consistently refused to work in partnership, treating Indigenous peoples as political pawns rather than collaborators. He warned that these policies are eroding Yolŋu culture and could be seen as a slow genocide. The resignation will lead to a by-election in Mulka, though the timing remains undecided. Guyula emphasized that genuine improvement requires respectful dialogue and genuine partnership with Indigenous leaders.

Why it matters

The resignation highlights deep tensions between Indigenous representatives and the NT government over policy and consultation.
