Nurse sentenced to seven years for sexually assaulting patient at Royal Bournemouth Hospital
A nurse at the Royal Bournemouth Hospital received a seven-year prison term after being convicted of sexually assaulting a woman in her 30s while helping her undress.
During an emergency department visit on July 30, 2023, a woman in her 30s was moved to a private room at the Royal Bournemouth Hospital where nurse Ernest Paul Cruz assisted her with changing clothes. While doing so, Cruz began touching her inappropriately and proceeded to sexually assault her. The victim disclosed the abuse to another nurse the next day, leading Dorset Police to intervene.
At trial in Bournemouth Crown Court, Cruz was convicted of sexual assault and assault by penetration, receiving a seven-year custodial sentence, a Sexual Harm Prevention Order, a restraining order and registration as a sex offender. Detectives praised the victim’s courage in coming forward and highlighted the seriousness with which such cases are treated. The case underscores vulnerabilities patients may face in healthcare settings.
