NVE threatens Statkraft with forced fine over serious dam safety breaches
NVE identified serious safety violations at Statkraft’s Sauda and North Norway dams and warned of a forced penalty if they are not remedied.
Norway’s water and energy regulator, NVE, reported that audits of Statkraft’s hydro plants in Sauda and the Nord-Norge region uncovered 26 and 20 safety infractions, which it classified as highly serious. Although the inspections did not reveal an imminent danger of dam failure, the findings indicate a pattern of inadequate compliance with essential safety standards by Statkraft. NVE’s director of supervision and preparedness, Kristian Markegård, said the shortcomings reflect a systemic weakness in the company’s dam-safety management.
The regulator has issued a warning that a compulsory fine will be levied if Statkraft does not meet the prescribed correction deadlines. NVE stressed that, despite these issues, the overall safety of Norwegian dams is generally good. Statkraft now faces pressure to address the violations promptly.
Why it matters
The warning highlights potential risks to Norway’s hydro infrastructure and could force a major energy producer to improve safety practices.
