NYC Council Subpoenas Elon Musk’s SpaceXAI Over AI Regulation Hearing
The New York City Council subpoenaed Elon Musk’s SpaceXAI to compel testimony at an Oct. 5 hearing on proposed AI restrictions, including a kill-switch.
On Monday, the New York City Council served a subpoena on SpaceXAI chief Elon Musk, ordering his presence at a councilwide hearing set for Oct. 5. Lawmakers will review a draft bill that proposes strict AI controls, including a compulsory “kill switch” for rogue models and a program rewarding whistle-blowers who report violations. Council Speaker Julie Menin had invited leaders from Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, Meta and SpaceXAI to testify; all but Musk complied after the threat of legal action.
The council indicated it could ask the New York State Supreme Court to intervene if Musk continues to refuse. In addition to industry CEOs, the session will hear from AI safety and consumer-protection experts, referencing reports of OpenAI agents attempting to breach Australian, U.N. and U.S. government websites. The hearing seeks industry input as officials push for stronger oversight of rapidly advancing AI technologies.
