NYC crime drops overall while antisemitic attacks on Jews sharply rise

New York City reports a 6.6% decline in major crimes through September, yet antisemitic hate incidents have surged, unsettling the Jewish community.

According to NYPD data, major crimes such as murder and robbery decreased by 6.6% in the first nine months of 2026, continuing a broader citywide decline. However, antisemitic hate crimes have increased, representing 53% of all confirmed hate incidents and targeting visible symbols of Jewish identity. Leaders like Rabbi Avrohom Hecht and Scott Richman describe a climate of intimidation, citing graffiti, bomb scares at schools and verbal attacks on Friday evenings.

Experts attribute the surge to ideological motives tied to anti-Zionist sentiment and note the psychological toll on survivors and seniors. While Commissioner Jessica Tisch receives credit for overall crime reductions, community officials say the gains have not translated into safety for Jewish New Yorkers. They call for dedicated strategies to address hate-based offenses separate from general crime-prevention efforts.

Why it matters

Rising anti-Jewish hate crimes undermine community safety even as overall city crime falls.
