NYC hate crimes rise sharply, Jews targeted in over half of incidents

NYC hate crimes increased by about 16% this year, with antisemitic offenses making up more than half of the reported cases.

New York City police released statistics showing a 15.8% rise in hate crimes, reaching 425 incidents compared with 367 the year before. Antisemitic offenses increased by 8% and accounted for more than half of all confirmed hate crimes, despite Jews making up roughly one-tenth of the city's residents. The data highlight violent incidents, including the July stabbing of a Jewish man outside an Upper West Side synagogue.

In contrast, the NYPD reported the safest summer ever, with 195 shootings, 249 shooting victims, and 66 murders—the lowest totals for the June-August window in recorded history. These figures underscore a growing threat to the Jewish community amid an overall decline in other violent crimes.

Why it matters
