NYC honors fallen officer John Perry with new Upper East Side street name
A street at East 101st Street and Madison Avenue was renamed for Officer John Perry, who died in the 9/11 attacks.
On the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks, New York City renamed the intersection of East 101st Street and Madison Avenue as John William Perry Way. Officer John Perry, who had been filing paperwork to retire from the NYPD and become a lawyer, ran from One Police Plaza to the Twin Towers and perished in the collapse. His brother Joel and sister Janice attended the ceremony, pulling a rope to reveal the new street sign while the NYPD Color Guard and bagpipes provided solemn tribute.
Perry had received the NYPD Medal of Honor posthumously in 2001. Family members recounted the anguish of searching for him after the attacks and the lingering pain after 25 years. The dedication aims to keep his memory alive in New York City history.
Why it matters
The naming preserves the memory of a 9/11 hero and underscores the personal toll of the attacks on first-responders.
