NYC mayor releases Spanish video advising citizens on handling ICE encounters

Mayor Zohran Mamdani posted a Spanish-language video outlining how New Yorkers should respond to Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents, prompting sharp criticism from Republican officials.

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani released a short Spanish video that details the rights of individuals when confronted by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents. He states that ICE cannot lawfully enter private residences without a court order and tells viewers to look for the words “United States District Court” and a judge’s signature on any document. The mayor advises anyone stopped on the street to remain silent, ask “Am I free to go?” and refrain from signing anything until they consult an attorney, while also providing the city’s legal-support hotline.

He concludes by affirming New Yorkers’ right to protest and his commitment to protect that right. The video was swiftly attacked by Republican senators and representatives, including Mike Lee, Rick Scott, Nick LaLota, and Bernie Moreno, who accused Mamdani of helping illegal immigrants evade the law and called the content dangerous and treasonous. Judicial Watch president Tom Fitton also labeled the video as incitement.

Why it matters

The video fuels a national debate over immigration enforcement and local government guidance on citizens' legal rights.
