NYC subway stations hit extreme summer heat, officials explore underground cooling solutions

Temperatures inside several Manhattan subway stations have surged to near 100 °F, prompting commuters and staff to complain, while the MTA and city officials consider a thermal-energy network to pull heat away and reuse it in winter.

Jack Klein, a 31-year-old construction site manager, has been measuring temperatures in seven Manhattan subway stations, noting readings that climb to 101 °F and heat-index levels that exceed 130 °F, far hotter than the street above. Passengers and staff, including an Italian tourist named Leo, have complained of the sweltering conditions, with some comparing the platforms to ovens. The MTA’s chief executive, Janno Lieber, says the aging infrastructure makes cooling a complex challenge and that a new city-state study will explore a thermal-energy network that extracts heat from stations and stores it in deep boreholes for winter heating of city facilities.

The proposed pilot targets the Brooklyn Bridge-City Hall and Chambers Street stations, which average 96 °F in summer. Engineers note that underground stations act as heat traps, with train brakes, exhaust, and passenger body heat all contributing to rising temperatures. While the plan could lower platform heat by a few degrees, implementing it across the 472-station system would require billions of dollars and many years. In the meantime, commuters may have to rely on interim measures such as free water distribution and faster train service to reduce time spent on hot platforms.
