NYK Line to debut hydrogen-fuel-cell cruise ship in Tokyo Bay by 2027
Japanese carrier NYK Line will launch its first hydrogen fuel-cell powered vessel, the Amami, for day cruises in Tokyo Bay around May 2027.
NYK Line plans to introduce the Amami, its inaugural hydrogen fuel-cell powered cruise ship, for day trips around Tokyo Bay by May 2027. The 48-meter vessel, built in partnership with Toyota Motor Corp. and Yanmar Power Solutions, runs on hydrogen supplied by Eneos Holdings and promises reduced noise and vibration for passengers. It offers three upscale private rooms with butler service, a 12-seat glass lounge at the bow, and a deck bar, accommodating roughly 90 guests who can enjoy French cuisine using seasonal Japanese ingredients while viewing landmarks such as Rainbow Bridge and Haneda Airport.
President Takaya Soga highlighted the ship’s role in communicating NYK Line’s new sustainability initiatives. A naming ceremony for the Amami was held on Sept. 11 in Sasebo, and the older party yacht Lady Crystal is slated to retire by the end of November.

The launch demonstrates a major Japanese shipping firm’s move toward low-carbon marine transport.
