NYPD equips unit with 100 long-range thermal binoculars for summer events
The NYPD purchased roughly a hundred high-range thermal imaging binoculars to aid its Emergency Services Unit during upcoming city gatherings.
A June 1 contract reveals the NYPD acquiring about a hundred ATN Bino X-6 Dual Multispectral Thermal Imaging Binoculars for a total of $118,580, sourced from ZLC Solutions in Leesburg, Virginia. Delivered two months after purchase, the binoculars are assigned to the department's Emergency Services Unit and can detect heat signatures up to 3,400 yards away. Police officials highlighted their utility in finding non-communicative or injured individuals, tracking suspects, and identifying threats during high-profile events like the FIFA World Cup, Sail250, the Puerto Rican Day Parade, the July 4th Spectacular, and the upcoming West Indian Day Parade.
Combining daylight optics, digital night vision and an infrared illuminator, the devices operate in dense fog, brush, smoke or total darkness—capabilities that exceed those of NYPD helicopters in wooded or interior environments. A spokesperson stressed that rapid identification can be critical in life-or-death situations, and the equipment may also support counter-sniper teams and other security units during major gatherings.
