NYPD removes over 3,000 firearms as city shootings hit historic lows

Since the start of the year, NYPD officers have taken 3,259 weapons off the streets, with Brooklyn contributing 915, the Bronx 782 and Manhattan 764 seizures. Among the recovered arms were 199 so-called ghost guns that lack serial numbers. Commissioner Jessica Tisch credited a precision-policing approach that deploys officers to high-risk areas and a data-focused Summer Violence Reduction Plan for the decline in gun-related incidents.

Through the end of July, the city recorded 381 shootings and 462 victims, both lower than the same period last year, and 149 murders, a new low for the first seven months. Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez and Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg praised the effort, noting its role in the broader safety improvements across New York City.
