NYSE adds two short pre- and post-market sessions for select stocks

The New York Stock Exchange will open a 7:30-9:25 a.m. and a 4:00-4:15 p.m. EDT trading window for a limited group of equities and ETFs.

The New York Stock Exchange announced that it will expand its daily schedule with two brief sessions: a pre-market window from 7:30 a.m. to 9:25 a.m. EDT and a post-market slot from 4:00 p.m. to 4:15 p.m. EDT. The extended hours will apply to twenty-five single stocks and five ETFs, featuring high-profile names such as Nvidia, Alphabet, Amazon, Oracle and Bank of America. Kevin Tyrrell, the exchange’s chief product officer, explained that the change reflects growing investor demand for more trading flexibility and reliable risk management.

He added that the NYSE plans to roll out similar equity extensions in December. The push for longer trading aligns with broader market trends, including the rise of cryptocurrency exchanges. CBOE research shows that daily extended-hours contracts now average 199,000, though the inaugural NYSE session moved less than $100,000 in contracts.

Why it matters

Longer trading windows give investors more time to react to news and manage risk, potentially affecting market liquidity.
