Oakland deploys massive 'Lightning Loader' to tackle illegal trash piles
Oakland officials have hired a large grappling truck called the “Lightning Loader” to remove roughly 34,000 pounds of illegally dumped waste from streets in West Oakland.
In an effort to combat persistent illegal dumping, Oakland has begun renting a heavy-duty grappling truck known as the “Lightning Loader” for $7,500 each month. The vehicle was dispatched to West Oakland, where it removed nearly 34,000 pounds of trash that had accumulated over two months at the intersection of 33rd Street and San Pablo Avenue, including concrete and wood debris. A city resident expressed enthusiasm about the rapid improvement, and the truck’s operator said the task that usually required an hour was completed in roughly ten minutes.
The municipality, which owns two older similar trucks that need repairs, plans to acquire an additional unit soon. To further curb dumping, three new environmental enforcement officers will be deployed, supported by strategically placed cameras to increase citations, according to City Council Member Carroll Fife.
