Obama Foundation faces internal pay gap as staff push for unionization

The Obama Foundation’s payroll shows half of its 342 reported employees earned six-figure salaries, while lower-paid staff are seeking union representation.

According to the Obama Foundation’s 2025 tax filing, 172 of its 342 employees earned salaries above $100,000, with CEO Valerie Jarrett drawing $771,000. Dozens of lower-paid staff, organized under Obama Workers United with AFSCME Council 31, have filed a public letter demanding union representation, citing rolled-back benefits and increasing workloads. High-earning executives also include former Obama aides such as Christina Tchen, Michael Strautmanis, and Laura Lucas Magnuson, each receiving between $396,000 and $431,000.

The foundation argues that compensation is set using comparability data and a consultant, and points to comparable executive pay at other major nonprofits. Critics, including Illinois Republican Party Chairman Bob Grogan, claim the foundation enriches Obama’s inner circle at taxpayers’ expense, though the organization maintains the presidential center’s construction is privately funded. The payroll surge coincides with a $50.4 million payroll and benefits bill in 2025, up from $18.5 million in 2018, as the foundation expands its programs and completes the Chicago center.
