October 7 Attack Undermines Hope for Israeli-Palestinian Coexistence

The Oct. 7 Hamas assault and Israel’s ensuing war have sharply lowered public confidence in a peaceful two-state solution, according to recent polls.

The Oct. 7, 2023 Hamas incursion into southern Israel triggered the most lethal terrorist strike the country has faced, followed by an extensive Israeli campaign against Gaza. The violence shattered the expectations of many Israelis who had advocated for coexistence through proximity and economic ties. New polling data highlights a dramatic shift in attitudes: a mere 17 % of Israelis now see a viable path to a peaceful two-state arrangement, and 68 % of Palestinians in the West Bank and East Jerusalem deem such coexistence impossible.

A separate Canadian survey found only 14 % view the conflict as reconcilable, with 58 % deeming it irreconcilable. The analysis warns that these stark figures expose a collapse of confidence that any diplomatic effort must address, and suggests that further separation measures are more likely than breakthroughs toward peace.

Why it matters

Public sentiment now heavily opposes a two-state solution, making diplomatic progress far more difficult.
