October Social Security benefits begin distribution in three weekly batches
The first batch of October Social Security checks, capped at $5,181, is being sent out today to retirees born on or before the 10th of the month.
Today, the Social Security Administration begins the first wave of October benefit payments, with amounts limited to a maximum of $5,181. Retirees born on or before the 10th of any month will see their checks arrive on Wednesday, Oct. 14. The program continues with a second distribution on Oct. 21 for those born between the 11th and 20th, and a third on Oct. 28 for birth dates on or after the 21st. Monthly payments depend on the age at which a person retires, ranging from $2,969 for early retirees at 62 to $5,181 for those who defer until age 70; full-retirement age benefits top out at $4,152.
Eligibility begins at age 62 for citizens, and the amount can be lower for lower lifetime earnings. The Social Security fund is financed by payroll taxes, but trustees warn it could be exhausted by 2032 without congressional action.
Why it matters
Millions of retirees rely on these monthly checks, and the schedule shows how the program is funded and its long-term sustainability concerns.
