Octopus Energy to Distribute Free Electric Blankets to Vulnerable Customers in 2026
Octopus Energy confirmed it will again give free electric blankets to customers with specific vulnerabilities, aiming to cut heating costs.
Octopus Energy has reaffirmed its free electric blanket programme for 2026, targeting customers with pronounced vulnerabilities, including seniors and people with medical conditions that make them sensitive to cold. The initiative leverages the firm’s purchasing power to acquire tens of thousands of blankets, each costing around £40-£50, and distribute one per household to maximise reach. The company estimates that using a blanket can reduce heating expenses by about £300 annually, translating to a 10-20% drop in winter energy bills for participants.
By August 2026, over 110,000 blankets had been supplied, and the scheme continues to prioritize those who cannot afford a blanket themselves. Interested customers must apply via the Octo Assist fund, after which their eligibility is reviewed and a decision is given within roughly one week. Octopus also provided safety guidance, noting that blankets should be used as throws, not mattress toppers, and are unsuitable for children under five.
Why it matters
The scheme helps vulnerable households lower heating costs, reducing energy poverty and supporting public health during winter.
