Odense emerges as Europe’s hub for military drone testing and production

Odense, Denmark, hosts the International UAS Center, a vast test site that supports the rapid growth of low-cost combat drones used across Europe.

In Odense, the International UAS Center of Denmark offers a uniquely large testing area—roughly 7 % of the country’s surface—for both aerial and maritime drone operations. This facility has turned the former Hans Christian Andersen Airport into a bustling hub where universities, tech firms and defence agencies collaborate. Companies like Universal Robots, born from earlier shipyard-robotics projects, and Dropla Tech, which builds low-cost ground drones, now serve European militaries.

The Ukraine conflict has sped up the conversion of commercial drone technology into inexpensive, mass-produced weapons, a trend linked to rising civilian deaths in places such as Sudan and Ukraine. Analysts warn that drones are becoming “almost ammunition,” making traditional defence systems less effective and increasing psychological stress for populations under attack.

Why it matters

The rise of cheap, mass-produced combat drones reshapes warfare and heightens civilian risk worldwide.
