Odisha faces ₹1.1 trillion investment need for renewable power, storage and grid upgrades
A new IEEFA report says Odisha will need about ₹1.1 trillion over the next decade to add 10.7 GW of renewable capacity, plus storage and transmission upgrades.
A recent IEEFA report finds Odisha will require close to ₹1.1 trillion in investment over the next ten years to build a diversified, resilient energy system. The plan calls for adding 10.7 GW of renewable capacity between 2025-26 and 2035-36, together with 2.7 GW of pumped-storage, 0.13 GW of battery storage and extensive transmission upgrades, as outlined in the Central Electricity Authority’s Resource Adequacy Report.
Renewable generation accounts for 67 % of the total cost, storage 21 % and grid infrastructure 12 %, with the highest annual outlay of about ₹20,827 crore expected in 2029-30. Odisha’s installed solar (0.82 GW) and wind (none) are far below its estimated 139.5 GW solar and 12.13 GW wind potentials, while hydropower sits at 2.2 GW of a 7.6 GW potential. Expanding clean energy could also allow the state to export power, reducing its current reliance on coal, which still provides a significant share of state revenue.
Why it matters
The investment is crucial for Odisha's shift away from coal toward a cleaner, more reliable energy future.
