Odisha High Court overturns multi-crore mineral demand against JSW Steel

The Odisha High Court dismissed a Rs 696.32 crore demand for FY 2021 and sent a later Rs 1,473 crore notice for FY 2025 back for fresh review.

In two distinct cases, the Odisha High Court granted relief to JSJ Steel after the company challenged hefty mineral-dispatch demands. The first case involved a demand letter from September 6 2021, amounting to Rs 696.32 crore for the fiscal year 2020-21, which the court quashed following an earlier April 20 2026 ruling. The second case concerned a demand of Rs 1,473 crore issued on August 21 2025 by the Deputy Director of Mines, Joda; the court annulled this notice and ordered a fresh assessment by the appropriate authority.

Both judgments were pronounced on October 16 2026. JSW Steel noted that the disclosures were delayed to allow time for reviewing the rulings.

Why it matters

The rulings relieve JSW Steel of large financial liabilities and may affect future mining revenue assessments in Odisha.
