Ofcom flags ongoing worries over X's removal of illegal hate and terror material

Britain's media regulator Ofcom says it still has concerns about X's handling of illegal hate and terrorist content, despite improved response times.

Ofcom examined X's initial quarterly compliance report and found that the company adhered to agreed timeframes for assessing suspected illegal hate and terrorist content, with response speeds better than those observed earlier in the year. Despite these improvements, the regulator said it continues to harbor concerns about the overall efficacy of X's removal efforts and noted inconsistent reports regarding the platform's engagement with third-party specialists.

In parallel, Ofcom pointed out that SpaceXAI, previously known as xAI, has tightened restrictions on its standalone Grok chatbot, preventing UK users from viewing, generating, or sharing pornographic material and barring companion bots like "Ani" from sexual conversations. The investigation, launched in January after allegations that Grok was used to produce illegal sexualised images, will now assess whether X has fulfilled its legal duties to protect British users from unlawful content. X has not responded to requests for comment.

Why it matters

The regulator's scrutiny could force X to strengthen content controls, affecting millions of UK users and setting precedents for online safety enforcement.
