Off-duty ICE officer shot after assaulting Fresno family on their lawn

An off-duty ICE agent who fell asleep on a Fresno family's front lawn was shot by the homeowner after the agent attacked them.

Around 3:20 a.m., officers discovered David Gonzalez, a 32-year-old off-duty ICE agent from Texas, asleep on a Fresno family's front lawn near East Dudley and North Broadway. A woman returning home alerted her 72-year-old father, who asked the agent to leave; Gonzalez allegedly resisted, forcing the elder man to the ground and later striking the daughter when she intervened. The father responded by firing a legally owned gun, striking Gonzalez in the abdomen.

The woman's boyfriend, an off-duty police officer, arrived and placed handcuffs on the wounded agent. Gonzalez was hospitalized, expected to be booked into Fresno County jail, and charged with felony vandalism and battery. ICE referred inquiries to the Fresno Police Department, which confirmed the homeowner will not face charges for the shooting. Local officials expressed concern over intoxicated federal agents sleeping in residential neighborhoods.
