Off-duty NYPD officer shoots himself in leg while holstering gun at Bronx home

Emergency crews arrived at a Bronx house on Bailey Avenue shortly after 1 p.m. following a report of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The victim, a 33-year-old NYPD officer from the 1st Precinct named Demitrious Caceres, was found alert with a leg injury and later transported to Jacobi Medical Center in stable condition. According to his brother, Caceres was preparing to leave his home and was trying to holster his gun when it accidentally discharged.

Neighbors described a quiet scene despite the presence of police vehicles and ambulances. Investigators could not enter the premises until the homeowner gave permission, and evidence bags were removed from the scene around 6 p.m. The case remains under investigation.
